Here in AUS, the Feds continue to accept tax payments in cash. Happy about it? No, they closed all the cash desks years ago. But the courts ruled: there is no way for our courts to enforce alternate recovery if the taxpayer is offering cash.

So if I order lunch at a restaurant, and I have my lawyer e-file for bankruptcy as I eat my appetizer, am I protected by the automatic stay (11 USC 362) from having to pay the check?

Looks like you did plenty of research on it and have a valid argument. Unfortunately since those guys are part of the government they always find ways around their own rules. Maybe you can talk to some and get that brought up in a trial.
